Building a New Life in Bali: A Case Study of Diana’s Villa Project

We are happy to share the story of our energetic senior client Diana*, who decided to make a radical change to her current life style. Diana, a true explorer in her heart, was not attracted by the idea of simply retiring. She dreamed of a truly enjoyable retirement.

While there are indeed many benefits to living in Estonia, at one point the darkness, the cold winters, the high cost of living and the geopolitical uncertainty simply became too much for Diana. She sold her Estonian home and decided to invest part of the money in a new beginning on the magical island of Bali by to building herself 2 private villas. Diana had never been to Bali before, but she was inspired by the idea of the exotic, the hot climate, the ocean breeze and the new experiences. And, of course, the idea of a new home in a place that's always warm and affordable.

Embracing Change: Diana's Radical Move from Estonia to Bali

Bali as a place had already appealed to Diana, and she found her way to Investland Bali via the internet. This inspired her to contact us. We arranged a free video consultation with her, during which Diana shared her initial ideas and desires with us and we mapped out her needs.

We analysed the real estate market and regions of Bali and made her a personalised offer to build two houses in Sanur. Agreements reached, we signed a cooperation agreement. Diana began packing her bags to travel to Bali to come and check out her future land, and we contacted our architects, who proceeded to design villas to meet the client's needs.

Today, Diana is comfortably settled in Bali and together we are looking for suitable land. This process usually takes 2-3 months. With her budget we are building two modern small villas for Diana in Sanur, an area ideally suited to her needs.

The Value of Money: Two Villas for the Price of One Home

In Bali, Diana can afford much more for her budget. Real estate prices in Estonia are crisp at the moment, and after selling her Estonian home, she will be able to have two houses built in Bali. Both houses will also have a private pool with a beautiful sun terrace. One of the personalized villas will be for her, the other for extra income and peace of mind. Suitable for AirBnb, long-term rentals or even for hosting grandchildren and relatives who have travelled a long way to visit.

Sanur, where Diana decided to build her villas in partnership with Investland Bali, is a peaceful area suitable for the mature age. There are convenient walking streets, great beaches and world-class healthcare facilities. There is also a nice community and plenty of social activities. After all, studies show that community and an active social life are the key to a longer life.

Diana's fantasy of waking up to tropical birdsong every morning and enjoying the hot sun on the terrace of her Bali home first thing is about to come true. And just a stroll away, the ocean and restaurants await her for sunset dinners. Bali is renowned not only for its beautiful landscapes, but also for its friendly locals and rich culture. Diana also enjoys participating in the various rituals and appreciates the local traditions.

Two Villas, Endless Possibilities: Diana’s Investment in Bali

Diana’s project consists of two stylish villas, that will be located on the same plot of land, but each with its own private entrance. One villa will be her private oasis, the other a potential source of income. This solution will allow her not only to enjoy her new home and living environment, but also to generate income from Bali's booming rental market, where holiday homes are in high demand. For an Estonian senior, this is a significant rental income, as the tourist season in Bali lasts all year round.

Would you also like to enjoy a two-in-one deal - a beautiful home and/or a good return on your investment? Bali is the place to do it.

Mini-Interview with Diana

  1. Were you afraid of selling your home in Estonia and investing in the unknown? What was your biggest hesitation about this decision?

I was worried about whether it was a credible deal. The whole cost of the project and the value I was getting for it seemed too good to be true at first.Several calls to the Investland Bali team calmed me down. I asked hundreds, if not thousands of questions, but the professional support of Kristjan and Oliver and the rest of the team, and their ability to answer all my questions logically (and from every angle), helped me make the final decision.

  1. What made you make the final decision?

As I am a retired person, and actually disabled, it is very difficult for me in Estonia. Can you imagine, but the medical system said that I was too old for them to even treat me anymore! I was very disappointed. The decision to put my savings on the line and move to a new country is extreme, but I didn't feel well in Estonia anymore. At least in Bali I'll be in the sun under palm trees. In fact, my husband and I had planned to come to Bali together, but he abandoned the decision in the process of setting up the company. I was sure of myself by then. Today, my husband has changed his mind after seeing things go so well. Several members of my family are actually planning to come to Bali. I have always been the first, the brave, the pioneer in our family. I go first and others follow.

  1. What were the first questions and concerns you had when you started thinking about moving and investing in Bali?

Oh, I had lots of questions! First of all, how exactly does this legal process work? It seemed so complicated at first! How do I pay for my villas in the first place? Do I have to set up bank accounts and how does that work? I wouldn't have been able to manage all this myself. I couldn't even think in rupiah at first, let alone understand Indonesian law and the property market.

  1. What moment after arriving in Bali reassured you that you made the right decision?

Because of my health, I move rather slowly. You can't imagine how often I get sent to all sorts of places in Estonia, for example when visiting the grocery store. Here, people always come to help me. They smile and are warm. Also one night I slept in a hammock in the yard between the rice fields. How I ended up sleeping there is an adventure in itself, but it was one of the best dreams of my life. I looked at the starry sky and the palm leaves and felt really good.

  1. What has been the greatest joy or surprise you have experienced while living in Bali?

It's the stunning nature, the great climate and the energy of the island itself. And the goodwill of the locals. My current hotel neighbours are a lovely local family. They don't understand English very well and I don't speak it either, but we get on very well. They took me to different healers, made me eat healthier. My health here in Bali is many times better than in Estonia! Here I feel that people really care how I am doing. It also reminds me of the first time I went to the supermarket on my scooter. As I was buying quite a lot of stuff, I happened to drop things at one crossroad. In the middle of this crazy intense traffic! And just imagine, people got off their scooters, pushed my scooter to the side of the road, made sure I was OK, picked up my stuff and calmly put it back on my scooter. No one got angry  or cringed, not even one of my fruits was run over. Unbelievable!I think I was made to live here. I am very spiritual, and in Estonia, I sometimes feel that people do not understand me. Here, I fit in just like a local!

  1. How do you spend your evenings in Sanur?

I like to stay in my hotel and just lounge by the pool. But in the evenings, I walk the promenade with my new girlfriends, drink tea and coffee and eat at the night market.

  1. How has Investland Bali supported you?

They have taken care of all the financial and legal paperwork for me. Helped me set up a company, bank accounts. Of course, they have also patiently answered all my questions. I also got a scooter at a better deal than market price through them. In the beginning, they also gave me emotional support and helped me settle in and get to know the local way of life. Now we are going to see the land for my house together. Thank you!
